YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS

Middle and High School Students, Graduating Seniors and Performance Arts College Students

The Ouray County Performing Arts Guild is pleased to offer scholarships to nurture performing arts skills in young individuals in our community, leading to a lifelong interest in the performing arts – either as a professional performer, or as an avocation while pursuing an unrelated career.

OCPAG Youth Scholarships - two categories available
The first category is for graduating high school seniors and those already enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning. The second category is for middle and high school students, with a grant component for community organizations supporting students of the performing arts.

Scholarship amounts vary from year to year and also depend on the number of applications received. In the past, graduating seniors of exceptional merit have received scholarships in the range of $1,000 to $2,000, while middle and high school applicants have received up to $500 to help them pursue enrichment activities in the performing arts.

Susan Hillhouse Performing Arts Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship opportunity for enrolled and full-time active college/university students to apply who are pursuing a performance arts degree (major or minor) or an arts-related teaching degree (major or minor) and intend to stay active in the arts after the receipt of their degree – either as a performer or accredited teacher. One individual will be chosen per year. Students may apply for consecutive years (and that includes students who previously received the scholarship may again apply for consideration). If no candidate is selected, the funds will be held over for the following year/s. This is a ten-year scholarship set up to honor past OCPAG President Susan Hillhouse beginning in 2020.

Scholarship Criteria

A) Priority given to graduating high school seniors.
Then, those already enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning leading to an Associate, Bachelors, or Graduate degree would then be considered.

  1. Applicants may apply for scholarship funds to improve, augment, or develop new skills in traditional and emerging performing arts. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing theater, dance, and vocal and instrumental music of all genres. Consideration will also be given to fields related to the performing arts, such as filmmaking, audio engineering, playwriting and screenwriting, performance poetry, etc.
  2. Applicants’ scholastic standing and participation in extracurricular activities related to the performing arts will be considered positively, but will not be an overriding consideration in awarding scholarships.
  3. Preference will be given to students residing in Ouray County, including those who are home schooled. Consideration will also be given to students living in neighboring communities who participate in performing arts events or programs within Ouray County.

B)  Middle school and high school students.

  1. Scholarships or grants may be given to individuals, or to community organizations supporting students of the performing arts.
  2. Scholarships or grants may be used to further develop a student’s skills in the performing arts. Granted funds may be used for camps, seminars, performance tours and other educational endeavors within the performing arts realm.
  3. Preference will be given to students residing in Ouray County, including those who are home schooled. Consideration will also be given to students living in neighboring communities who participate in performing arts events or programs within Ouray County.

OCPAG’s ongoing mission is to...

...connect local youth with the performing arts. We have given over $39,000 in scholarships over the past twelve years to deserving students pursuing advanced training in music and theater, and we sponsor a variety of master classes, in-school performances featuring visiting artists, and children’s programs.

We are one of the founding members of the Alpenglow Arts Alliance and as such, we work with other arts-related organizations to support each other’s mission.  We serve as partner supporters for the Open Bard Poetry Series and the Ouray Community Chorus.
